What is your favorite part about pottery?: My favorite part about pottery is the balance it brings to my life. As a dentist in the Air Force, so much of my work is fast-paced, precise, and focused on problem-solving—pottery lets me slow down and create with my hands in a completely different way. I love the process just as much as the finished piece: the feel of the clay, the small imperfections, and the way each piece takes on its own personality.
I’m especially drawn to making functional ceramics—pieces that become part of someone’s daily routine. There’s something really meaningful about creating a mug, vase, or planter that someone reaches for every day. I try to incorporate a sense of whimsy and nature into my work, often inspired by flowers and my love of gardening, so each piece feels both beautiful and a little bit joyful.
Tell us about yourself and your pottery journey: I’m a dentist in the U.S. Air Force based in Colorado, and I found pottery as a creative outlet a couple of years ago. What started as a way to unwind quickly became something I genuinely love and look forward to—it’s the perfect contrast to my clinical work and gives me space to slow down and create more intuitively.
Over the past two years, I’ve grown from learning the basics to developing a style that feels very personal to me. I focus on functional ceramics with a touch of whimsy—pieces that are meant to be used and enjoyed every day. I’m especially inspired by flowers, plants, and my love of gardening, which often show up in my forms, textures, and surface design.
My journey is still evolving, and that’s one of my favorite parts. I’m always experimenting, learning new techniques, and finding ways to blend beauty with function in a way that feels thoughtful, approachable, and a little bit joyful.
